Last spring we hatched chickens in both my children’s classrooms. I chose chocolate laced orpington eggs because I like orpington and I had never had that color before. This quickly led to convincing my husband to build me a new chicken coop at our new farm that would look like a gingerbread house. I am still painting the coop but the chickens are looking very nice. We ended up with a nice rooster that is good to his girls and so far has been neutral to the humans and in keeping with the gingerbread theme we named him Streusel. We had one blonde orpington hen that matches the rooster and my youngest named that hen Muffin. The rest of the orpington ladies all look the same so I just call them the “Chocolate Chips”. This has led to some hilarious breakfast conversations in the beginning when my children would ask at breakfast if Muffin and The Chocolate Chips all made it up on the roost bar the night before. I’m glad to report that all the chickens are now big enough to get on the roost bar all by themselves! The chickens will be excited as the garden is done for the year and they will soon get access to the garden to turn it over for me this winter!
